Chhattisgarh State largely consists of plateaus streaked with high range of Satpuras in the North, the river Mahanadi and its tributaries in the Central Plains and the Bastar Plateau in the South. The Past (Hills) give rises to the main river systems- Mahanadi, Hasdo, Sheonath and indravati.

The state has varied natural settings of great beauty. To the north of river Shivnath there were 18 garhs belonging to the Kalchuris and to the South there were another 18 garhs belonging to the Kalchuris of Raipur. Hence, the total of these 36 Garhs (Forts) formed the basis of naming this region as Chhattisgarh. Chhattisgarh lies between 17 - 46' to 24 - 5' North and 80 - 15' to 84 - 20' East. It covers an area of 1,35,133 Sq. kms. bordering six other states - Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand in the North, Orissa in the East, Andhra Pradesh in the South, Maharashtra in the South West and Madhya Pradesh in the North West.

Ambikapur

AmbikapurAmbikapur is a small town in the state of Chhattisgarh in India. It is the capital town of Surguja district, the largest district of Chhattisgarh.

The district of Surguja is spread over an area of 22,237 km2, and is rich in forests. Most of the terrain of the district is forested and hilly. Major tourist areas near Ambikapur are Ramgarh, Kudargarh, Dipadih (Ancient Sculptors), Rakasganda, Sitabengara, Tattapani (Hot water spring) and Semarsot.

Natural resources include Coal, Bauxite, forest products and paddy crops.

Ambikapur is inhabited by people from all over the country. Moderate weather and a serene environment make it an ideal place for settlement. Unlike the capital town, major district population comprises of aboriginal population. Among these indigenous tribes are the Pandos and Korwas, who are still living in rural areas.

Bilaspur

BilaspurBilaspur district is not only famous in Chhattisgarh but in India due to its unique characerstics like rice quality, Kosa industry and its cultural background. Bilaspur district has a major contribution in the naming "Dhan Ka Katora" for the entire Chattisgarh region .

The Bilaspur city is approximately 400 years old and the name "Bilaspur" has been originated from the Fisher-woman named "Bilasa". Over the years Bilaspur has developed a lot, despite several natural calamities.

Bilaspur district is located in eastern part of Chhattisgarh and fall within lattitude 21'47" to 23'8" and longitude 81'14" to 83'15" . Bilaspur district is surrounded by Koriya district in north, Shahdol district of MAdhya Pradesh in South , Raipur district in East and Korba ,Janjgir -Champa district in West. The total area of Bilaspur is approximately 6,377 Sq.Km,after the bifurcation of old Bilaspur district in three districts (New Bilaspur, Korba and Janjgir-Champa District).


The New Bilaspur district is hilly towards North and plane in South. Secondly, the northern part of Bilaspur is quite cold and hot as we move towards Southern part. The maximum temparature of Bilaspur district is 45 Deg. Cen. and average rain fall is 1,220 mm approximately. Major rivers which surrounds Bilaspur district are Agaar, Maniyaar and Arpa .

Total population of Bilaspur district is 16,948,83 out of which 8,59,027 is male and 8,35,856 is female. The SC and ST population out of total population according to census'91 is 3,23,474 and 3,47,216 respectively. Out of the total population , 79% people live in Village area and the density of the population is 266 person per sq.Km.

Kanker

KankerThe Kanker District is situated in the southern region of the state Chhattisgarh. Previously Kanker was a part of old Bastar district. But in 1999 Kanker got it's identity as a independent district. Now it is surrounded by four districts of chhattisgarh state, named Bastar, Dhamtari, Durg and Rajnandgaon. Kanker is situated within the longitudes 20.6-20.24 and latitudes 80.48-81.48. the total area of the district is 5285.01 suare kilometers. Small hilly pockets are seen throughout the area and increase the beauty. mainly the five rivers flow in the district named- doodh river, Mahanadi, Hatkul river, sindur river and Turu river.

The Kanker is situated on the National Highway number 43. It lies between the two well developed cities of Chhattisgarh named Raipur (Capital of Chhattisgarh) and Jagdalpur. The Kanker is 140 kilometers away from Raipur and 160 Kilometers from Jagadalpur. A lot of Roadways and Private buses as well as taxis are available on this national Highway. Presently railway is not available in the district.

The climate of the district is of Monsoon type. The May month is the hottest month and the December month is the coolest month. Average rain of the district is 1492 mm. 90% rain fall during the June to October. Climate changes in to dry and wet. Dry climate is found in Kanker and Charama and the wet climate is found in Bhanupratappur.

At present the Kanker district has 6 tehsils named Kanker, Charama, Narharpur, Bhanupratappur, Antagarh and Pakhanjoor and 7 blocks named Kanker, charama, bhanupratapur, Narharpurn Antagarh, Durgu kondal and Koyali beda. The total number of villages is 1074. The number of revenue villages is 988, whereas forest villages are 47. The nuber of Gram Panchayats is 362.

Korba

KobraKorba is the power capital of the newly formed state Chhattisgarh. The district comes under Bilaspur division and is inhabited mainly by tribals including the protected tribe Korwas (Pahadi Korwa). Korba is blessed with lush green forest cover, where a sizable number of tribal population is found. The Adivaisis in the forest areas leave in tantum with the environment and have retained their distinctive cultural characteristics and traditional observances

Korba is often referred as the Industrial Hub of Chhattisgarh. The district within itself is enriched with all the essential raw materials needed for power generation namely coal and water. The four Thermal Power Plants (KSTPS, BCPP, CSEB East, CSEB West) together generates 3650 MW of electricity. Besides these, there is a Hydro Electric Power Station situated at Bango. Coal is also abuntant in the district. The SECL, a proffit making coal company under the Coal India Limited has many of its important mines in Korba district. BALCO (Bharat Aluminium Company) an aluminium major is based in the district.

Raipur

RaipurRaipur District is situated in the fertile plains of Chhattisgarh Region. This District is situated between 22o 33' N to 21o14'N Latitude and 82o 6' to 81o38'E Longtitude. The District is surrounded by District Bilaspur in North, District Bastar and part of Orissa state in South, District Raigarh and part of Orissa state in East and district Durg in West. The district occupies the south eastern part of the upper Mahanadi valley and the bordering hills in the south and the east. Thus, the district is divided into two major physical divisions, Viz., the Chattisgarh plain and the Hilly Areas.

Mahanadi is the principal river of this district. Its tributaries being Sendur, Pairy, Sondur, Joan, Kharun and Shivnath. The fertility of lands of Raipur district can be attributed to the presence of these rivers. Mahanadi originating in the hills of Sihava flows in the direction of East into the Bay of Bengal. Mahanadi crosses the district diagonally from its south western corner to Northern boundaries. The area to the west of the river comprising the North Eastern part of Dhamtari (now separated from the Raipur District), the whole of Raipur, Rajim Tehsil and the western part of Baloda Bazar Tehsil is a part of the open Chhattisgarh plain, gently sloping, thickly populated and closely cultivated and almost devoid of forests. The plain also extends in a belt of about 13 to 15 kilometers east of Mahanadi, except between Sirpur and Kasdol where the hills are very closed. The Southern part of Mahanadi plain is about 305 metres above the M.S.L. , whereas the northern part is about 244 metres above the M.S.L.

Raipur district is administratively divided into 13 Tehisils and 15 revenue blocks. It comprises of two Lok Sabha Constituencies (Raipur and Mahasamund) and 13 Vidhansabha constituencies. The chief crop of this region is Paddy. Raipur district is fast emerging an industrial centre too. There are 58 large and middle scale industries established so far in this district which have offered employment to nearly 12351 persons. Industrial development in this district is mainly because of availability of wide spread Minerals, Coal, Electricity and cheap labour cost.
